When Should You Replace Instead of Repair a Windscreen?
Repair is faster, cheaper and often insurance-free — but only when the damage qualifies. Push past the thresholds below and you compromise structural safety, optical clarity and airbag deployment. Here's exactly when replacement is mandatory.
Mandatory replacement triggers
1. Crack longer than 150 mm. Resin can't bond a crack this long without leaving optical distortion across your line of sight.
2. Damage in the driver's swept-wiper zone. SABS standards prohibit repair here because the residual mark distorts forward vision.
3. Damage within 50 mm of any edge. Edge damage compromises the structural bond to the body. The glass can detach under crash load even after repair.
4. Damage that penetrates the PVB interlayer. If you can feel a sharp edge from inside the cabin, the inner glass layer is compromised. Replace.
5. Multiple chips (more than three). Each repair creates a stress concentration. Multiple repairs in close proximity weaken the glass.
6. Any damage on an ADAS camera mounting area. Even a tiny mark can defract the camera's view enough to disable Lane Keep Assist or AEB.
What happens if you delay
Glass cracks spread with temperature change, pressure change, vibration and time. A single chip can become a full-width crack from one cold morning, one big pothole, or one hot afternoon parked in the sun.
Driving with a cracked windscreen is a roadworthy violation in South Africa (NRTA Regulation 209) — and your insurance can refuse a future replacement claim if you didn't act when the damage was repairable.
The ADAS factor
If your vehicle has Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, AEB, Traffic Sign Recognition or a forward-facing camera (most vehicles 2018+), repair is rarely an option for damage near the camera mount. The camera needs a perfectly clear view at a known refractive index — repair resin creates a slight distortion that throws calibration off.
FAQs
Is it illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen in SA?
Yes — NRTA Regulation 209 prohibits any windscreen damage that obscures the driver's view. Traffic officers can issue a roadworthy fine.
Will my insurance still cover it later?
Possibly not. Insurers can refuse claims where you knew about repairable damage and failed to address it before it spread.
Can I drive home if my windscreen cracks?
Short distances at low speed, yes. Avoid the highway and book a fitment that day or the next.
