Can a Cracked Windscreen Be Repaired? (2026 Guide)

Yes — most stone chips and short cracks can be resin-injection repaired in under 30 minutes. Whether your specific damage qualifies depends on size, location, depth and how long it's been there. Here are the SA industry rules every reputable installer uses.

The four rules of repairable damage

1. Size: chips smaller than a R5 coin (≈26 mm) and cracks shorter than 150 mm are repairable.

2. Location: damage must not sit in the driver's primary line of sight (the swept-wiper zone directly in front of the steering wheel). SABS standards prohibit repair in this zone because the resin leaves a faint distortion.

3. Depth: damage must affect only the outer glass layer — if it has penetrated the PVB interlayer or inner layer, replacement is mandatory.

4. Edge proximity: any damage within 50 mm of the windscreen edge compromises structural integrity. Replace, don't repair.

How resin injection actually works

The technician cleans and dries the chip, vacuum-extracts air and moisture from the damage, then injects a UV-curing optical resin under pressure. UV light cures the resin to 95% of the original glass clarity and full structural strength. Total time: 20–30 minutes.

After repair the chip is still visible as a faint mark — but it's structurally sealed and won't spread further. Done properly, the repair is permanent for the life of the windscreen.

When repair fails

Repair fails if the chip has been contaminated with rainwater, wax or windscreen washer fluid that didn't fully extract. It also fails if the chip is too old — UV exposure makes the surrounding glass brittle, and the resin can't fully bond.

Rule of thumb: get a chip repaired within 7 days of it happening. After that, a full crack across the windscreen is almost inevitable from the next big temperature change or pothole.

Insurance and chip repair

Most SA comprehensive policies — Santam, Discovery Insure, OUTsurance, MiWay, Hollard, Old Mutual — cover chip repair with zero excess. It costs the insurer R500–R800 vs R2,000+ for a replacement, so they actively encourage it. WhatsApp a photo of the damage; we'll confirm in minutes whether your insurer will cover it.

FAQs

How long does a chip repair take?

20–30 minutes. You can drive immediately afterwards.

Will the chip still be visible after repair?

Yes — as a faint mark, roughly 10–20% of its original visibility. The structural seal is the point, not invisibility.

Will my insurance excess apply to chip repair?

Most SA comprehensive policies waive excess on chip repair because it's vastly cheaper than replacement.

Do you offer mobile windscreen replacement?

Yes. Our mobile fitment unit comes to your home, office, dealership or roadside anywhere across Gauteng — Randburg, Sandton, Fourways, Midrand, Roodepoort, Bryanston, Pretoria and Centurion at no extra charge for most suburbs.

How long does windscreen replacement take?

Standard replacements take 60–90 minutes. ADAS recalibration adds 30–45 minutes. Allow an extra 60 minutes safe-drive-away time for the urethane adhesive to cure.

Can I drive immediately after replacement?

We use fast-cure Sika urethane, which gives a safe-drive-away time of approximately 60 minutes. Avoid car washes, slamming doors and rough roads for the first 24 hours.
