How Long Does Windscreen Replacement Take?
A full windscreen replacement takes 60–90 minutes of physical work, plus another 60 minutes of safe-drive-away time for the urethane adhesive to cure. ADAS-equipped vehicles add 30–45 minutes for camera recalibration. Here's the full breakdown.
Stage-by-stage time breakdown
Prep (10–15 min): mask the bodywork, remove cowl/wiper arms, cut out the old urethane bead and lift the damaged glass.
Surface prep (10–15 min): clean the pinch-weld, apply primer to any bare metal, prime the new windscreen edge.
Adhesive bead + set (10 min): lay a continuous bead of Sika urethane on the pinch-weld and gently set the new windscreen into position using suction handles or robot arms.
Trim, refit & quality check (20–30 min): reinstall cowl, wiper arms and interior trim; leak-test; clean glass; verify rain/light sensor and camera operation.
ADAS recalibration (30–45 min): static (target-board) + dynamic (road-drive) calibration where required.
Safe-drive-away (60 min): urethane reaches full structural strength. Most fast-cure urethanes are safe at 60 min; cold-weather formulas can take 2–4 hours.
What 'safe-drive-away time' actually means
The windscreen is a structural component. It supports the roof in a rollover and provides the back-stop for passenger airbag deployment. If the urethane hasn't cured, the glass can shift under crash load. Modern fast-cure urethanes (Sika PowerCure, Dow BetaSeal Express) reach minimum drive-away strength in 60 minutes at 20°C and 50% humidity. Colder or drier conditions extend cure time.
What to avoid for the first 24 hours
Don't slam doors (pressure spikes inside the cabin can lift the new glass off the bead), avoid automatic car washes and high-pressure water for 48 hours, don't remove the retention tape for at least 4 hours, and avoid rough or corrugated roads on day one.
FAQs
Can I wait at the workshop?
Yes — we have a customer lounge with Wi-Fi and coffee. Most cars are done in 60–90 minutes.
Will my warning lights stay on after replacement?
Some vehicles need a battery reset or short drive after ADAS recalibration to clear codes. We verify before handover.
Can I drive immediately?
After 60 minutes safe-drive-away time, yes. For longer cures we'll tell you exactly when before you leave.
