How Insurance Windscreen Claims Work in South Africa

Almost every comprehensive motor policy in South Africa covers windscreen damage. You shouldn't pay the full replacement cost out of pocket — here's how the claim actually works, what your excess will be, and what to watch out for.

The five-step claim process

1. WhatsApp us a photo of the damage and your insurer name. We confirm in minutes whether the damage qualifies for repair (often zero excess) or replacement (excess applies).

2. We submit the claim directly to your insurer with your policy number — we're an approved supplier to Santam, Discovery Insure, OUTsurance, MiWay, Hollard, Old Mutual Insure, King Price, Auto & General and Naked.

3. Insurer authorises (usually same day — within 30 minutes for chip repairs).

4. We book your fitment — workshop, mobile to your home / office, same-day for most vehicles.

5. On completion you pay only the excess (if any). We invoice the insurer for the balance.

What your excess will likely be

Santam: R500–R1,500 standard; zero on chip repair.

Discovery Insure: R1,000 standard; zero with Vitality Drive Diamond status; zero on chip repair.

OUTsurance: R1,250 standard; zero on chip repair.

MiWay: R1,000 standard; zero on chip repair.

Hollard / Old Mutual Insure / King Price: R1,000–R2,000 standard depending on plan.

Numbers above are typical and can vary by policy tier. Always confirm with your broker.

When NOT to claim

If your excess is higher than the cash repair / replacement cost (e.g. a R1,250 excess on a R1,450 Polo Vivo windscreen), pay cash. Claims can also affect your no-claims bonus on certain policies, though most insurers don't penalise glass-only claims.

Rule of thumb: always claim chip repairs (zero excess, no impact on bonus). For full replacements, do the math against your excess first.

Things insurers will refuse

Insurers refuse claims for: damage that occurred outside the policy period, damage that wasn't reported within the notification window (usually 30 days), damage repaired by a non-approved supplier without authorisation, and second-event damage where the first event wasn't reported. Always notify within 30 days and use an approved supplier.

FAQs

Do I need to get three quotes?

No — most insurers accept a single quote from an approved supplier. We're approved with all major SA insurers.

Will claiming affect my premium?

Most insurers don't increase premiums for glass-only claims. Confirm with your broker.

How long does authorisation take?

Chip repair: usually under 30 minutes. Full replacement: same business day for standard vehicles, 24–48 hours for premium European.

Frequently asked questions

How much does windscreen replacement cost?

Standard sedans and hatchbacks range from R1,450–R2,500. Bakkies and SUVs typically range R2,000–R3,500. ADAS-equipped or European premium vehicles range R3,500–R9,000+. Send your registration on WhatsApp for an exact quote.

Can you repair a stone chip?

Yes — chips smaller than a R5 coin and outside the driver's primary line of sight can be resin-repaired in around 30 minutes. Most comprehensive insurance policies cover chip repair with zero excess.

Do you offer mobile windscreen replacement?

Yes. Our mobile fitment unit comes to your home, office, dealership or roadside anywhere across Gauteng — Randburg, Sandton, Fourways, Midrand, Roodepoort, Bryanston, Pretoria and Centurion at no extra charge for most suburbs.

Do you assist with insurance claims?

We handle the entire claim directly with Santam, Discovery Insure, OUTsurance, MiWay, Hollard, Old Mutual Insure, King Price, Auto & General and Naked Insurance. You only pay the excess (if any) on completion.

How long does windscreen replacement take?

Standard replacements take 60–90 minutes. ADAS recalibration adds 30–45 minutes. Allow an extra 60 minutes safe-drive-away time for the urethane adhesive to cure.

Can I drive immediately after replacement?

We use fast-cure Sika urethane, which gives a safe-drive-away time of approximately 60 minutes. Avoid car washes, slamming doors and rough roads for the first 24 hours.

Do you service Randburg, Sandton and Midrand?

Yes — these are core service areas. We also cover Fourways, Bryanston, Roodepoort, Rosebank, Pretoria, Centurion and the East Rand with same-day or next-day mobile fitment.
